A Different Look

Backstory Post #1

Today’s photo is called A Different Look at the Bells. Now you might be wondering, where are or what are the Bells? The name is short for the Maroon Bells in Aspen, Colorado. They are three 14,000ft (14er) mountains and are so named because they look like bells. The ‘Maroon’ part of the name comes from the color of the iron particles in the stones. In certain lights, the color really comes through.

This is probably one of my favorite places to photograph. If you Google them, you will see the iconic and aforementioned maroon colors, or you’ll see the fall colors where the aspen trees dance on the reflection of a calm lake. And while I do have the iconic fall colors photo, I am pretty excited about this one.

This image was created along one of the hiking trails in the Maroon Bells natural area. The hike took me and my friends closer to the mountains and into some beautiful wildflower areas. I, of course, had my camera and wanted a different shot than what I previously had of the Bells, so I found some flowers to focus on, adjusted my shutter speed to account for a little bit of a breeze, and pressed the shutter button.

It came out beautifully. No, it’s not maroon in color, but I love the contrast of the dark green against the almost yellow trees and mountains and the pop of pink, purple, and green in the foreground. It’s still the Bells, it’s just a different look.

Thanks for reading and check back for more behind the photo stories!
